Can You Paint Over Old Exterior Paint? A Bellingham Homeowner’s Guide

One of the questions homeowners often ask us during an exterior painting estimate is whether all the old paint needs to come off before the house can be repainted. It's understandable. Once you notice peeling or fading, it can look like the entire exterior needs to be stripped back to bare siding before anything new goes on.
Fortunately, that's usually not necessary.
In many cases, new exterior paint can be applied over an existing coating and perform extremely well. The important question isn't simply whether old paint is present. It's whether that old paint is still properly bonded to the surface underneath it.
That's where a good exterior painting job really begins.
How Long Does It Take to Paint a House Exterior Bellingham WA?
A straightforward exterior repaint may take several working days, while a larger home or one requiring extensive preparation can easily take a week or longer. That's a fairly wide range, but there's a reason for it: applying the finish paint is only one part of a professional exterior painting project.
When we first inspect a home, we're looking at much more than its size. What's the condition of the siding? Is the existing coating firmly bonded, or are there areas that need significant scraping? Are caulk joints failing around windows and trim? Is there exposed wood that needs primer? How many colors are involved? Are there difficult gables or areas requiring additional access?
Two Bellingham homes of almost identical size can require very different amounts of time once those details are considered.
Preparation Often Takes Longer Than Homeowners Expect
This is where timelines between painting contractors can begin to look very different.
Pressure washing or cleaning, allowing surfaces to dry, scraping loose paint, sanding transitions, replacing failed caulk, protecting windows and landscaping, and spot-priming bare areas all happen before the finish coats can do their job properly.
We've talked about this before because it's one of the principles behind how we work at MOTIV: prep matters more than paint. A crew can certainly make a project move faster by reducing preparation, but those saved hours aren't much of a benefit if the coating begins failing years earlier than it should.
If we find an area that needs additional attention, we'd rather address it while we're already there than cover it up simply to stay on an aggressive schedule.
Bellingham Weather Gets a Vote Too
Summer gives us some of the best exterior painting conditions of the year, but Bellingham is still Bellingham. Weather can change, and professional painters have to work with it rather than pretend it doesn't matter.
Rain is the obvious concern, but surface moisture, temperature, direct sun, and drying conditions can also affect when certain products should be applied. A wall that appears dry shortly after a shower isn't necessarily ready for paint, particularly if the siding has absorbed moisture.
Sometimes that means changing the order in which we work around a house. Other times it means giving a surface more drying time. We know homeowners want their projects completed on schedule, but we'd never recommend sacrificing the longevity of a paint job just to finish a day sooner.
The House Itself Can Add Time
Architecture makes a difference as well. A simple one-story home with straightforward siding is naturally faster to work on than a multi-story Craftsman with detailed trim, multiple gables, covered porches, and several accent colors.
Color changes can affect the schedule too. Going from a darker exterior to a much lighter color, or the other way around, may require additional attention to coverage. Doors, shutters, detailed trim, fascia, and other architectural elements also add time because those areas require precision rather than speed.
This is why we prefer looking at the entire project before discussing a firm timeline. A house isn't just a number of square feet.
Be Careful With the Fastest Timeline
When comparing painting estimates, homeowners naturally notice both price and completion time. If one company says a project will take significantly less time than everyone else, it's worth asking why.
A faster timeline isn't automatically a red flag. An experienced, well-organized crew can work very efficiently. But homeowners should understand where that efficiency comes from. Is the preparation process the same? Are the same surfaces being repaired and primed? Are drying times being respected? Is the scope actually identical?
Those questions tell you much more than the number of days written on an estimate.
